🎙️ A Quick Fire Round with Louise
What are your biggest life lessons?
A piece of advice from a manager during my radio days has stuck with me for over 20 years: ‘Never stop being curious.’ I apply this mindset to everything. Curiosity allows you to question, consider, and avoid jumping to conclusions or judgments too soon. It’s the key to approaching new, daunting tasks with an openness and readiness to learn.
What is the best thing about being your own boss?
For me, it’s about celebrating my passions and ambition as I embark on an exciting journey to learn something new and live out my vision. The flexibility is paramount—I choose how to use the 24 hours in a day. Freedom is really important to me, and being my own boss gives me that in abundance. I also genuinely enjoy meeting new people; it’s fascinating to hear their stories, and the entrepreneurial world gives you access to so many diverse voices.
How do you start your day?
First, I yawn, stretch, and gulp a glass of water. I’m not a morning person at all! To get going, I then do a 10-15 minute yoga routine via YouTube. This wakes me up, gets me moving, focuses my mind, and prepares me for a busy day with some mindfulness. Then it’s time to shower and get dressed—before finally pouring myself a “cup of ambition” (in the words of Dolly Parton, ha!).
Who (or what) inspires you most?
I am most inspired by stories about successful people. Their journey is normally fascinating, especially when they share the challenges, setbacks, and difficulties they encountered. This inspires me because it reminds me that success isn’t easy, and I learn a lot from the resilience of others. My biggest inspirations are Oprah and, of course, my mum.
What makes you feel creative?
I often describe my brain as being in ‘sponge mode,’ soaking up creative ideas wherever I look. This could be at a museum, in the theatre, on holiday, when watching a TV show or film, or listening to a podcast. Absorbing different platforms and media—visuals, sounds, and images, like art exhibitions—helps me to feel truly creative.
What do you admire most about Solopreneurs / entrepreneurs?
It’s the sheer mindset—the courage to go it alone and be your own boss. Juggling many different tasks as a small team and leading with a vision is a tough job, but I find that dedication fascinating!
Your best tip to get motivated for a busy day?
Take a walk, step outside, and change your perspective.
Your best tip(s) to network and build relationships?
Networking is a reciprocal situation that creates opportunities to listen, learn, and share. My tips are:
- Listen and be present: Make time for the connection.
- Be curious about others: When you meet people, find out as much as possible about who they are, their passions, motivations, and what they do for work.
- Seek out relevant groups: Look for official networking groups that match your industry, interests, or qualifications.
Best podcast for a solopreneur / freelancer / leader?
When I’m driving, running, or at the gym, I love to listen to The Diary of a CEO hosted by Steven Bartlett. It features high-profile people who openly share their personal and career challenges and triumphs. Hearing such a diverse range of points of view is incredibly insightful, giving you a glimpse behind the scenes to truly understand the thoughts and motivations of people in leadership. Other great listens include Being Freelance, Squiggly Careers, and Screenshot.
