Back to Basics: My Essential Toolkit for In-Person Networking

Lately, I’ve been diving back into the world of networking events, and I have to say, I’m especially enjoying the ones held in person. Virtual events are great for convenience, but in my humble opinion, nothing truly beats the energy and connection of meeting someone face-to-face.

If, like me, it’s been a while since you attended a physical networking event, the rules of engagement have changed slightly. Here is my handy little list of things I now make sure to take with me before I head out to meet and greet new colleagues, clients, and partners.

1. The Business Card Dilemma (And the Alternatives)

This used to be your undisputed calling card. You’d leave an event with a small pile of contacts! Increasingly in recent times, though, I’ve noticed not as many people hand out physical business cards anymore. (Perhaps COVID played a role in the shift, or maybe it’s just digital fatigue.)

  • My Advice: Consider carefully if you want to get some printed. If you do, make them memorable! Alternatively, I’ve started thinking about something else I can give away that leaves a lasting impression—perhaps a branded sticker, a small piece of informational collateral, or even a professional QR code that links directly to my digital portfolio.

2. My LinkedIn Link — Ready to Launch!

Nowadays, I notice people are quick to connect via LinkedIn right there on the spot. They usually ask for your full name (to search and find you) or, even faster, ask you for your profile link.

  • My Advice: Have that link ready! Better yet, make sure your profile is absolutely up to date before you go. If I’ve just had a really good, engaging conversation with a potential contact, I don’t want to lose that momentum because they click through to a messy profile. Pro Tip: Make sure your profile photo is a decent, professional headshot. No silhouette profile pictures, please—we want to see your friendly face!

3. A Smiley, Positive Mindset and Demeanour

Let’s be honest, some days I genuinely don’t feel like networking, and that’s perfectly fine. But I’ve found it’s always helpful to attend a networking event when I feel positive, upbeat, and truly ready to have engaging and uplifting conversations with others. Your energy is contagious!

  • My Advice: If I’m feeling nervous or anxious, I think of a quick way to calm my nerves beforehand—maybe a quick breathing exercise or listening to an upbeat playlist. I try to remind myself that everyone there is in the same boat, and I just need to be ready to put my best foot forward.

4. A Notepad Ready to Capture Ideas

Networking events can be a whirlwind of new names, job titles, business ideas, and useful websites. I find a physical notepad invaluable.

  • My Advice: I keep a small, professional notebook handy to scribble down key ideas, names, and thoughts I want to revisit later. I often use it to jot down a quick note about the person I just met (e.g., “Follow up on X project,” or “Loves Y hobby”) right after our conversation ends. This makes my follow-up email much more personal and effective.
