3 fun ways to keep in touch with colleagues
Video calls are a new way of life for work, keeping in touch with friends, and connecting with people in general.
I’ve heard a lot of people say they have video call fatigue as too much screen time takes its toll.
During these times of lockdown restrictions, it can feel like Groundhog Day so I have a few ideas to keep video calls fun: buddy up virtually, mind your body language and get creative:
Buddy up virtually
Once upon a time, it was easy to catch-up with colleagues – at the photocopier, in the kitchen or elsewhere in our offices. With remote working now the ‘new normal’ for many of us (thanks COVID!), we have to work even harder to connect with the people we work with and our industry peers.
Virtual ‘coffee dates’, lunchtime walk-and-talks, and regular touch-in meetings are all great ways to strengthen your relationships – within and outside of work – and to maintain good mental health.
Your body language is important (even on Zoom!)
Like it or not, work video calls are here to stay. And with your head and shoulders being the only thing your clients and colleagues can see (well, that and a snazzy virtual background if you have one), it’s important you use your body language to your best advantage.
While on-screen, try to sit up straight rather than slouching, maintain eye contact with your camera, and nod regularly to show you’re listening. A reassuring smile can also signify you’re enthusiastic and engaged.
Have fun and get creative
It’s easy to be bogged down in the day-to-day task list but give yourself a break and take some time to have fun and be creative with your video call. Download to design a video call background you can use. It can be a great ice breaker for a conversation with someone new and bring a spark of artistry. Start the call with a song that may be a theme for the meeting or conversation. You may want to prepare a fun and colourful holding slide that includes the meeting topic so the participants have a visual reminder of the meeting and what you will discuss. They often say that there’s no such thing as a silly idea so free your mind and see where your creativity takes you!
